The impact of some spectroscopic parameters such as the line intensity and the line shape, on planetary atmospheric parameters determined by spatial experiments are discussed from considerations based on laboratory measurements and remote sensing studies of the earth's atmosphere. Particular attention is given to the Jovian atmosphere in connection with the Voyager missions. Studies of elemental or isotopic ratios (C/H, D/H, C-12/C-13) are reviewed emphasizing to what extent they are contaminated by problems of spectroscopic character. New accurate systematic measurements of molecular parameters of gases involved in radiative transfer studies of the earth and planetary atmospheres are promoted.
