The fine grained matrices of type 3 ordinary chondrites can be classified as 'fluffy' and 'clastic' textural types, where the former are usually distributed in the most primitive chondrite, Semarkona, and the latter are distributed in other primitive chondrites. The composition of olivine in fine grained matrices varies widely, usually from forsteritic to fayalitic compositions. The existence of disequilibrium assemblages suggests that the matrix-forming materials have not undergone extensive in situ heating, and that they preserve records of the processes that occurred in the nebula. The mineral assemblages and compositions of the matrices further indicate that they are products of reaction and condensation over a wide temperature range, although most are low temperature minerals.
