The interaction of the neutral atmospheres of comets and non-magnetised planets with the solar wind via pickup ions leading to mass loading is of considerable interest. This results in the erosion of the planetary atmospheres. The interaction between the solar wind flow and newly created ions drives the modified two-stream instability (MTSI) resulting in the excitation of plasma turbulence around the lower-hybrid frequency. These waves are capable of transferring the kinetic energy in the solar wind flow to electrons and ions resulting in 100eV electrons in the mantle region of planets much as Venus and keV electrons in the coma of comets which are the source of x-ray emissions. We will present kinetic theory and numerical simulations of mass loading using simulations of mass loading using full particle and hybrid codes comparing the results to observations. The model that we present has applications also to artificial plasma releases, interacting neutral gas clouds in and shock waves in the heliosphere. Attention will also be paid to the x-ray observations of high velocity clouds, which can be used to estimate of mass of plasma in the Galaxy.
