Dust grains, which form under favorable conditions in the cool, extended atmospheres of AGB stars, play an important role in the driving mechanism of the strong winds observed in these objects at various metallicities. Due to their large absorption cross-sections, newly formed dust particles and the surrounding gas, which are frictionally coupled, are accelerated by radiation pressure leading to a massive circumstellar outflow.
In this contribution, we present hydrodynamical wind models for long-period variables which have been adapted to lower opacities resulting from subsolar metallicities, as found for instance in the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds. Furthermore, we present a mass-loss formula based on extended samples of these models for SMC stars, as well as the resulting mass-loss histories of single stars, obtained from its application to stellar evolution models.
