Statistical problems posed by three different astronomical research topics are discussed. The first is the testing of the highest peaks of periodograms for significance, in cases where the time series are irregularly sampled. The second concerns inference on rapid quasi-periodicities, as well as the detection of the onset of such processes in astronomical time series. The third topic falls under the general heading of model selection: discriminating between stochastic and multi-parameter deterministic descriptions of the evolution in the periods of variable stars.
