The results of observational and analytical investigations into the nature of the 'missing matter' in the Universe are summarized. The search is spurred by mass/luminosity ratios of galaxies and galactic clusters, which indicate that the observed dynamics require greater gravitational forces than can be attributed to the masses of objects detected by their luminosities. The discrepancies increase with the size of celestial area scanned. The closeness of galaxies in clusters has implied that near-passes between galaxies might spill invisible gas and some stars into intergalactic regions. The advent of orbiting X-ray telescopes has permitted viewing of hot intracluster gas clouds, which can account for 10 percent of the missing matter. Quasar light, being highly characteristic, reveals the presence of many intervening neutral clouds in spectrographs. Other matter has been detected in gigantic hydrogen clouds which may predate the formation of galaxies. The gas clouds, however, even when combined with postulated intergalactic neutrinos do not contain enough mass to account for observed dynamical effects if they are following the Newtonian inverse-square law over cosmological distances.
