In the following paper it is shown that a simplified concept of the scanning electron microscope may be developed into a useful tool for mineralogical investigations in space. By means of using an electron beam as sample probe the signals of secondary electrons, back-scattered electrons, cathodo-luminescence, and emitted characteristic X-rays can be exploited as sources of information. The practical feasibility of this approach is proven by measurements on powdered soil and solid rock samples.
