Malmquist bias is discussed in the case where absolute magnitudes are derived from a relation M = amp+b where p is a distance-independent measurable parameter. It is shown that the amount of bias at constant observed p depends on (1) the intrinsic scatter of the relation, (2) the observational random errors in p, and (3) the luminosity function of the objects. A generalized Malmquist formula for the case where the luminosity function is gaussian, is given. The importance of the observational error in p is emphasized. The distance-dependence of the bias as averaged over p is discussed.
