Eigenfrequencies of Couette flows or linear velocity fields in stratified fluids are numerically determined for various values of the Froude number. The behavior of the eigenfrequencies as a function of the Froude number makes it possible to investigate the influence of a velocity field on the stability and the normal modes of a static configuration. All modes of Couette flows can be identified as g(+)- or g(-)-modes of a static fluid modified by the velocity field. As the velocity gradient of Couette flows with a fixed density stratification increases, the g-modes merge into local disturbances associated with the continuous spectrum.
