An analytical discussion is conducted concerning the time delay due to a galaxy and cluster in general, approximating first the projected cluster mass distribution by a uniform density disk. Attention is then given to the gravitational field of the cluster, which is characterized in terms of three-parameter quadrupole shear as suggested by Falco et al. (1984). It is found that the additional time delay caused by a cluster depends on its focusing properties. For the case of the double quasar QSO 0957 + 561 A, B, the cluster contributes positively to the focusing.
