1 - 5 μm photometry and 2 - 4 μm spectral photometry of the infrared source S 106-IRS 9 are reported. The observed energy distribution together with the absorption bands of CO and H2O in the infrared spectrum show that IRS 9 is a very reddened late type M giant star, which suffers high extinction produced by the S 106 molecular cloud. The distance to IRS 9 is greater than 1 kpc and thus, it is physically unrelated to the star formation region S 106.
