The relations linking Geneva photometry with Stroemgren's beta index have been established for the O, B and early A-type stars via the reddening-free X, Y, Z parameter space of the Geneva system. An excellent estimate of beta is obtained by means of these essentially continuum-defined parameters. The beta (X, Y) estimator, when compared with the line-defined beta index, creates a new type of colour index which is highly sensitive to departures from a normal H-beta line width versus spectral energy distribution relationship. As a first application, an analysis is made of the consistency of rotating stellar models with observations, the internal consistency of model atmospheres by means of synthetic photometry, and the effects of emission in the hydrogen lines on such a composite index.
