We show that every link can be presented as a boundary of a flat string surface. We define the string index and the flat string indexes of a link. Then we provide some upperbounds for these string indexes by using braid representatives and canonical Seifert surface. We study the relation between these string indexes and the genera of links. For applications, we calculate the string index of pretzel links.
