We briefly review the emerging paradigm which links the radio-quiet and
radio-loud classes of AGN to the different accretion states observed in stellar
mass black hole X-ray binary systems (BHXRBs), and discuss the relevance of the
AGN/BHXRB connection to blazar variability.
