We describe a method for classifying nilpotent associative algebras, that is
analogous to the Skjelbred-Sund method for classifying nilpotent Lie algebras.
Subsequently we classify nilpotent associative algebras of dimensions up to 3
over any field, and 4-dimensional commutative nilpotent associative algebras
over finite fields and over R.
