The evolution of cosmological matter from the Planck temperature to the temperature at atomic recombination is considered in the framework of a phenomenological approach. Particular attention is devoted to the sequence of phase transitions in the early universe. The inflationary era at temperatures of the order of the grand-unification energy scale and the quantum-chromodynamical confinement transition are analyzed in detail.
