After a short historical introduction the instrumentation of the double line vector magnetograph is described as it is working in connection with the tower telescope of the Solar Observatory "Einsteinturm" at Potsdam. Subsequently the authors outline the calibration of the instrumental response to incident polarised light. The theoretical calibration of deriving the magnetic field components from the observed Stokes profiles is the next step. Finally the authors give a few examples of vector magnetograms and outline some of their methods for deriving further information from the magnetograms.
