Models for Lyman Alpha forest absorbers have been calculated using a one dimensional, spherically symmetric hydrodynamical code. In the course of their evolution, clouds exist naturally in one of three modes: pressure confinement, free expansion and self-gravitation, depending upon cloud evolutionary stage and mass, and upon the pressure of the intergalactic medium. Simulations of cloud populations for all three types under a variety of conditions have been performed. The models are compared directly against observed Lyman Alpha forest redshift, HI column density and Doppler parameter distributions by computing absorption line profiles to generate area-weighted line parameter statistics. The permitted mass range for clouds confined by pressure is too narrow to allow a match to observations. A population of clouds purely in free expansion suffers from similar difficulties. Given a population mass spectrum dN ∝ M-δ delta~1, the observable characteristics of an ensemble of self-gravitating clouds covering 2.5 orders of magnitude in mass in a low pressure environment agree well with trends in the data.
