Differences in the degree of weathering between Antarctic and non-Antarctic meteorites were evaluated on the basis of measurements of the 3-micron and 7.4-micron bands in the IR diffuse reflectance spectra of 42 Antarctic and 29 non-Antarctic meteorites. Results show that non-Antarctic ordinary chondrites exhibit significantly larger values of the integrated intensity of the 3-micron band (indicating high degree of weathering) than do Antarctic ordinary chondrite falls. The spectra of all the Antarctic ordinary chondrites, on the other hand, show the presence of the 7.4-micron bands, suggesting that weathering-produced hydrous carbonates are ubiquitous in Antarctic ordinary chondrites. The non-Antarctic ordinary chondrite falls showed very weak 7.4 micron bands, indicating only few weathering-produced hydrous carbonates.
