Synoptic maps of the white-light corona from Solwind data are used to determine a synodic rotation rate at 3.5 solar radii for the interval 1979 to 1985. The rotation rate is rigid compared with that of the photospheric magnetic field and agrees with that of the coronal magnetic field as determined from a current-free model. This validates the use of the current-free approximation for estimating the average rotation rate of the coronal magnetic field over long time scales.
