The evidence of an inverse relation between SiO 2 and the other major constituents discussed in Part I of this series, together with the presence of particles of fused silica (lechatelierite) in tektites is explained on the basis of a physical mixing process. A mixture of 25 per cent quartz and 75 per cent of the non-volatile (at 1700°C) constituents of shale is shown to produce a close match to the average composition of tektites.
