IN a recent issue, Dr. Alastair Ward1 suggests an interesting experiment to check whether or not the universe is expanding. By using the Mössbauer effect we can study photon interactions and attempt to produce an increase in wave-length λ that is proportional to distance r. This would then explain the Hubble law (δλ/λ ~ r) as derived from the red shift in the spectra of distant galaxies. But physicists should bear in mind the uncertainties in the astronomical data. For example, it is quite possible that the red shift, and hence the apparent velocity of recession, increases as distance squared.
