An important goal in the study of high-redshift galaxies is to characterize the factors modulating the escape of Lyman alpha photons from star-forming galaxies. Understanding in more depth how Lyman alpha photons escape will lend insight into the structure of the ISM and the properties of large-scale outflows, which represent critical inputs into models of galaxy formation. The unique case of multiple-peaked Lyman alpha profiles, seen in a few percent of star-forming Lyman Break Galaxy samples, offers a particularly detailed look into Lyman alpha escape due to the rich structure of the emergent line. Despite recent advances in modeling of the escape of Lyman alpha photons from star-forming galaxies at z 3, the comparisons between models and data are often missing crucial observational information. In particular accurate systemic redshift measurements, intrinsic nebular line-widths, and intrinsic ionizing photon fluxes are all necessary when making a meaningful comparison between models and data. Here we present new results for a sample of 18 z 2-3 star-forming galaxies with multiple-peaked Lyman alpha emission lines. We have obtained H alpha (z 2) and [OIII] (z 3) spectra using the NIRSPEC spectrograph at the Keck Observatory. With these measurements, along with existing rest-frame UV spectra, we are able to probe the kinematics of galactic outflows using both Lyman α emission and interstellar absorption lines (when present). Our sample represents the first systematic study of Lyman alpha profiles with intrinsic HII region information. We can now provide important constraints on models for the escape of Lyman alpha photons from star-forming galaxies.
