A well written proposal is the first step in obtaining funding through any of the competitive grants programs at NSF. Characteristics of effective proposals and suggestions for their preparation will be discussed. Understanding the review process, especially by participating in it, are important advantages for preparing a successful proposal. NSF is giving increasing attention to the success of a proposal in meeting the review criterion of `broader impact'. A discussion of the new NSF requirements, what is meant by `broader impact', and examples of activities that meet this review criterion will be given.
