The development and potential uses of a polarity inversion line (PIL) algorithm is discussed. Using a multi smoothing technique on HMI data we are able to provide accurate locations of the PILs in areas of both high and low magnetic flux. We investigate the long-term evolution of the PIL as well as short-term evolutions potentially associated with flares and filament eruptions. PILs are also useful for putting the magnetic environment in context for other studies such as coronal waves, coronal holes, and eruptions in general.
