We have measured the confusion noise, defined to be the spatial variations of the background intensity, for all of the HerMES fields observed during the Science Demonstration Phase of the Herschel mission. The confusion noise is found to be consistent among the different fields for the three SPIRE wavebands centered at 250, 350 and 500 um, respectively. We also measured the associated instrument noise in each band. We discuss implications of these measurements for observers, including the number of sources per beam at the confusion limit and the number of scan map repeats required to obtain confusion limited maps.
