Scientific paper

Project Rigel is a prototype robotic telescope designed for use primarily in undergraduate and graduate teaching laboratories. It was completed in May 2002 and is now being used by undergraduate and graduate students for teaching and research. The Rigel telescope consists of a 37 cm equatorially mounted reflector, 1Kx1K CCD imaging camera, 12 position filter wheel, and 1024 channel spectrometer. The telescope is located at Winer Observatory in southern Arizona and is scheduled and operated by students on campus in Iowa City. I will describe the current state of the project, including technical highlights and challenges, and sample curricula.
