IC 10 is the nearest starburst galaxy, but its study is hampered by widely varying estimates of its distance and line-of-sight extinction in the literature. Using ground-based and HST data I derive a mean foreground reddening of E(B - V) = 0.77 and a distance modulus of ~ 24.4, reasonably consistent with previously published values based on Cepheid observations. An analysis of color-magnitude diagrams reveals that IC 10 has been actively forming for at least the past 100 Myr, and has substantial stellar populations as old as 10 Gyr.
