Relativistic pairs, pair plasma and strongly magnetized plasma creation using ultra-intense lasers has long been envisioned as a potentially important laboratory tool to study phenomena occurring in astrophysical systems. This dream is being realized through advances demonstrated by recent laboratory experiments. For example, relativistic pair jets, which are believed present in some of the most energetic events in the universe such as gamma ray bursts and the black holes, are now created using short pulse lasers. Gigagauss-scale magnetic fields similar to those in neutron star atmospheres have also been generated. This talk will give an overview of this exciting research field with highlights of the latest experimental results.
