There has been significant recent progress in observing the fine details of sunspots in the photosphere and in interpreting them through numerical modeling. However the large-scale mechanisms that lead to sunspot formation and provide for long-term stability remains vague. I will review recent efforts aimed at identifying and reproducing these mechanisms in numerical simulations of magnetoconvection around active regions and sunspots. This work has been supported by NASA through contract NNM07AA01C.
