Enrollment in our traditional Astronomy 101 lecture course is increasing, but the budget to add more laboratory sections is non-existent. In an effort to promote critical thinking outside the lecture hall and to introduce some of the hands-on experience that the laboratory course provides, laboratory-style homework assignments are now required as part of the lecture curriculum. The current assignments utilize internet resources (such as Galaxy Zoo) and naked eye observing. Implementation difficulties, completion rates, student feedback, and goals for future work will be presented.
