Among the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph Science Team observing programs is a study of interstellar gas and dust in the densest clouds COS can observe. Absorption spectra of hot stars behind such clouds have been analyzed to derive abundances of atoms, ions, and molecules. Physical conditions such as density and radiation field are among the goals of the program. Preliminary results are discussed.
