At present, Io's orbital period is shortening while Europa's and Ganymede's are lengthening as shown by Lainey et al. (2009) using astrometric measurements. Because the three innermost Galilean moons are in the Laplace resonance, the changes in orbital energy and angular momentum are distributed between the three moons. The evolution of the Laplace resonance is related to the rate of change of the satellite mean motions. The system is in stable equilibrium when the rate of change of the Io's mean motion is twice that of Europa and the rate of change of the Europa's mean motion is twice that of Ganymede. The observed tide-induced accelerations suggest that the Galilean satellites are evolving out of their Laplace resonance. The reported uncertainties by Lainey et al. (2009) are the formal 1-sigma errors which originated from the least squares procedure of the nominal solution. The possibility of contamination due to a systematic error in the fitting process is not completely ruled out, although it is unlikely due to the use of different observational sets (heliometer, photographic plates, CCD, HST, mutual events). In the present study, we took account of larger uncertainties and study the evolution of the Laplace resonance by considering relationship between the energy dissipation rate in the satellite and orbital accelerations.
