Adiabatic effects of geomagnetic-field restructuring in the near nightside magnetosphere prior to the onset of the explosive phase of a substorm are discussed. An externally-induced nonstationarity of the magnetic field is found to play an important role in developing the field-aligned plasma pressure anisotropy which is necessary for the formation of an intense and thin current sheet. Other sources of the anisotropy are considered which are related to the pitch angle dependence of the drift velocities.
