We have used an updated X-ray ephemeris for 4U 0142+61 to establish the relative phase of the optical pulsations with respect to the X-ray pulsations. The morphology of the optical light curve is similar to that of the 1-2 keV X-ray light curve, with two broad peaks, but the amplitude of the optical pulsations is several times that of the X-rays (27% vs 5%). The optical pulse lags the soft X-ray pulse by 0.30 +/- 0.065 in phase (2.58 +/- 0.56 seconds). This lag is too large to be due to a travel time difference, as there are no realistic geometries for 4U 0142+61 that accomodate distances of 2.58 light-seconds. We verify the accuracy of the relative timing using contemporaneous observations of the Crab pulsar at optical, radio, and X-ray frequencies.
