We draw parallels between the populations of isolated magnetic white dwarfs and neutron stars and make the case for a fossil origin of fields. We argue that the strong field neutron stars originating from single star evolution are born slowly rotating (Ps ~ 0.1 - 10 s) as is observed in high field magnetic white dwarfs. We also suggest that differences in the spin periods at birth may be reflected in the observed properties of AXPs, SGRs and high field radio pulsars. We argue that the observations of AXP 1E 2259+586 are consistent with the hypothesis that this star may have been born as a slow rotator and that the high field radio pulsar PSR J1814-1744 may be a truly older system which has already cooled significantly.
