We report on the detection by the Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor and the Wide Field Camera n. 1 on board BeppoSAX of a giant flare from SGR1900+14 occurred on April 18, 2001. The Wide Field Camera was automatically switched off after a few seconds, owing to the event brightness. This is the second long and giant flare ever detected from this soft-gamma repeater, after the powerful event of August 27, 1998. The time profile shows a fast rise, lasting about 8 s, followed by a slow decay, with a total duration of 40 s in the 40-700 keV energy band. The decay profile is characterized by an apparent 5.2 s pulsation. Although in this case the peak flux is much less intense and the duration is much shorter than in the 1998 case (~ 350 s), we find common temporal and spectral properties between the 2001 event and the intermediate stage of the 1998 one, a ``smooth tail'' starting just after the hard initial spike and lasting ~40 s, untill a 5.16-s four-peaked repetitive pattern modulation sets in. Using the new GRBM response function, we fit the time-integrated spectra of the two flares with the combination of a broken power-law and a black body.
