Two approximate procedures for taking into account stimulated scattering in radiative transfer calculations, which effectively linearize the problem are discussed. One of these methods is useful in the diffusion approximation, while the other can be used also in treatments which calculate explicitly the angle dependence of the radiation field. These considerations are particularly useful in models of X-ray sources which are not too far from thermal equilibrium, but where scattering is the main opacity, such as in steady or bursting X-ray sources and accreting pulsars.
