The subject of interstellar radio lines is reviewed from the standpoint of atomic physics, concentrating on such areas as general conditions in different regions of interstellar space, atomic and molecular structure, observed transitions, and general results of the observations. Identified and unidentified interstellar molecules are discussed along with the nature of interstellar matter, interstellar absorption, physical processes that can produce RF transitions in atoms and molecules, recombination lines, lambda doubling, observations in the 21-cm line of atomic hydrogen, formation processes for the 21-cm line, the distribution of hydrogen in the Galaxy, high-velocity clouds, the Magellanic Stream, and observations of hydrogen and helium recombination lines. Attention is also given to carbon lines in hydrogen clouds, interstellar molecular clouds, molecular processes in these clouds, interstellar isotope abundances, star formation from interstellar clouds, extragalactic observations at 21 cm, intergalactic matter, and radio properties of quasars. The relation of interstellar molecules to the origin of life on earth is evaluated, possibilities for interstellar communication are assessed, and some projects are examined, including Ozma, Cyclops, and CETI.
