An 8-color near-infrared photometric system was used to sample the stellar flux of approximately 160 stars of many spectral types to provide a blackbody color temperature, an infrared magnitude (at 1.04 microns), and molecular band strength indices of TiO, VO, ZrO, CN, and an unidentified feature. Based upon this data, classification sub-groups were established with the color temperature and band strengths of TiO and ZrO and used to subdivide the S stars into homogenous groups with respect to their physical variables and to estimate the values of the variables of those sub-groups.
