The presence of pure ultrafine particulates of BaTiO3 in the Allende meteorite is discussed in relation to the question of how such particulates could selectively stick to each other in the solar nebula. It is suggested that certain unique physical properties of BaTiO3 are directly associated with the formation of the particulates under conditions prevailing in the solar nebula. These include the highly dielectric and ferroelectric properties of four crystalline modifications, the fact that their dielectric constant is a function of temperature, the piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties of the tetragonal form, and the Curie temperature of 393 K. These properties are shown to imply that fine particulates of BaTiO3 are uniquely liable to high dielectric polarization in the presence of an electric field and that electrostatic attraction would promote selective sticking of fine particulates, leading to larger particulates or aggregates.
