Optical experiments using unstabilized space vehicles often require additional information about the angle between the normal axis and the source, referred to as the detector aspect angle. The degree of atmospheric transmission at 850 nm has been measured using a rocket-borne photometer in two rocket flights from Woomera, South Australia, for the purpose of developing an aspect sensor for small geophysical vehicles (balloons, rockets, and satellites).
