Some universal properties of quasars and active galactic nuclei are reviewed, and three hypotheses on the nature of the central object in active nuclei are evaluated. These include a supermassive rotating magnetoplasma body (a magnetoid), an accreting supermassive black hole, and a compact star cluster undergoing multiple supernovae. The models are examined in relation to observational data on the regular optical variability of four quasars, two N galaxies, and two Seyfert galaxies. It is concluded that: (1) the compact-star-cluster model is unlikely in the light of these data; (2) the simplest model of a black hole with a hot spot on the surface of a thin accretion disk cannot explain the observed regularity of the brightness variations; (3) a more complex model with an optically thick corona around the black hole may be compatible with the observations; (4) the magnetoid model is the least vulnerable one; and (5) a choice between the magnetoid and black-hole models must await further development of the models as well as additional observational data.
