The theory of flare stars based on the fast-electron hypothesis is compared with recent observational data, particularly observations of X-ray emission from such stars. It is shown that the UBV flare amplitudes for YZ CMi, V1216 Sgr, EV Lac, and AD Leo compare well with the values computed on the basis of the fast-electron hypothesis and that U-B, B-V color diagrams for several flare stars are in full agreement with the predictions of that hypothesis. The possibility of observing a 'negative infrared flare' is considered, the screening effect predicted by the fast-electron hypothesis is discussed along with theoretical flare light curves, and the X-ray spectra of flares on UV Cet and EV Lac are compared with the X-ray spectra of the sun and Capella. The duration and intensity of an X-ray flare on UV Cet are found to be in good agreement with those predicted by the fast-electron hypothesis. The possible relation of celestial gamma-ray bursts to flare stars is examined and completely discounted. It is concluded that the fast-electron hypothesis is not unreasonable.
