We use a uniformly selected and highly spectroscopically complete sample of X-ray sources to better understand the nature of the obscuring material around Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). Deep GALEX observations show that all of our AGNs with detectable ionizing flux are broad-line AGNs (after correcting statistically for contamination by foreground galaxies). We find that our broad-line AGNs can have a high ratio of ionizing flux to X-ray flux, even if the source is quite X-ray hard, which suggests that there is not a one-to-one correspondence between the X-ray photon index and the neutral hydrogen opacity of the source.
