The Pierre Auger Observatory in Mendoza province, Argentina, observes the highest energy cosmic rays using a hybrid detector. The hybrid technology consists of a surface detector (SD) array of 1600 stations spread out over 3000 km2 and 24 fluorescence telescopes (FD) located at four sites over looking the SD array. The hybrid technology allows for improved parameter estimation compared with what either SD or FD could measure by itself and allows for an energy calibration of SD array using high quality hybrid events. While the observatory has only been completed since June 2008, the first science results are already significant. The first results include strong evidence of flux suppression consistent with the GZK effect, limits on the photon fraction and neutrino flux. These results disfavor certain exotic models for the origin of the highest energy cosmic rays.
