The influence of dark spots in close eclipsing binaries is examined.
We show that the O'Connell efect is much greater if the spot lies on
the primary component. It is also shown that this phase shift is not
capable of modulating variations in the O-C diagrams of close eclipsing
binaries. This means that spots cannot cause orbital period changes.
