In 1999, the Ministry of the Flemish Community (Department for Science) allotted a research grant in the framework Bilateral scientific and technological cooperation to a consortium of four astronomical institutes, viz. Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Observational Astronomy), University of Concepcion (Department of Astronomy), Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Astronomical Institute) and Royal Observatory of Belgium.
The project, Long-Term Photometry of Variables, consolidates two decades of scientific collaboration between the Flemish and Chilean partners in the field of long-term monitoring of variable stars (Be stars, cataclysmic variables, S Dor and LBV stars, O stars, WR stars and pulsating main-sequence stars). The allotted grant intended to achieve intensive observing of several key objects selected among some of the most interesting variable stars of the southern hemisphere.
The purpose of the present workshop was to comply with the Government's requirement to organise a scientific conference in Flanders in order to debate the scientific outcome of the project along with a broader discussion of related scientific aspects. However, the diversity of research topics dealt with during the course of this project makes it impossible to present a deep view of the field in workshop format. Instead, we decided to concentrate on one common attribute that we all encounter when studying above-mentioned classes of variable stars: the underlying periods and cycles, the methods used to find these cycles, and the associated aspects of interpretation of the oscillations found.
The workshop format was a series of invited papers on key topics, supplemented with a number of contributed papers and posters, and ample time for discussions. The meeting consisted of seven sessions, each with a specific theme, viz. history (history of astronomy in Chile, variable star research, etc.), sky surveys, regular variations, non-regular and transient phenomena, chaos (observations), methods and models, and a session on very long waves.
The leading idea throughout the meeting was to discuss the interplay between all kinds of cycles that produce the data obtained when observing stars of the groups mentioned above. In order to provide the participants with a view much broader than the one they encounter when analysing the cyclic data of their pet stars, two lectures on periodicities, cycles and waves in totally different fields of variability were given at the beginning of the workshop: one talk on climate and weather variations by Lennart Bengtsson, and a review on cyclicities in the Sun by Sami Solanki.
