Variations of 13 Fraunhofer lines in two adjacent spectral regions (6880 and 6980 A) across the solar disk from center to limbs were recorded photoelectrically using a spectrometer equipped with a double monochromator. It is found that the line-profile parameters at the east and west limbs differ systematically. In particular, the residual central intensities measured at the same value of mu (the cosine of the angle between the line of sight and the solar radius) are shown to be somewhat higher at the west limb than at the east limb. It is noted that this effect becomes stronger with increasing line intensity for the group of lines studied. It is suggested that the observed east-west asymmetry may be caused by horizontal mass motion in the large-scale velocity field of the solar atmosphere.
