The Maunder minimum which represents a period of unusually low solar activity during the time from 1645 to 1715 has been investigated by Eddy (1975, 1976). This period had been first discovered by Maunder (1890) who had called it 'a prolonged sunspot minimum'. In connection with the results reported by Eddy, it appears that there was almost a complete absence of solar activity during the Maunder minimum. Periods of sunspot minima and maxima for the time from 1610 to 1968 are listed in a table and the reports of a number of investigators are discussed. It is concluded that the occurrence of the 11-yr cycle was not suspended during the Maunder minimum. However, the occurrence of a particularly low minimum of the 80-yr cycle produced a sequence of weakly pronounced 11-yr cycles. Aspects of asymmetry in the characteristics of the 11-yr cycle are investigated.
